Dark Discussions Podcast

Dark Discussions is a website dedicated to horror and genre fans by horror fans.  Hosts Philip and Gordon discuss horror films, books, and various other subgenres of the pulp and grindhouse type.

Their post-apocalyptic episodes so far include a three-part retrospective on the Planet of the Apes franchise.

Listen below, or visit Dark Discussions.

Episode 09 - Planet of the Apes Retrospective part 1
Philip and Mike discuss the history of the story and the importance of it to genre fans. A franchise was born including four sequels, a television show, a cartoon, comic books, and toys and memorabilia. Part One of our retrospective focuses on the novel, the first film and the first follow up within the franchise, Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Get ready and join us in a conversation that will bring this story full circle. One wonders whether Pierre Boulle was more a prophet than just a mere novelist.
Planet of the Apes Retrospective part 1

Episode 11 - Planet of the Apes Retrospective part 2
Philip and Mike discuss the final three films within the original franchise. Such topics as race relations, human rights, immigration, animal compassion, and modernization are thrashed out. With the scientific understanding that the wild ape has violent streaks and will also turn upon their own, do these films reflect the nation state where one unjust dictator is removed for a better life of its people only to be replaced by someone more wicked? With the ambiguous nature of the antagonists within these films, one may wonder whether one man’s belief system may be nothing more than that specific man’s perspective.
Planet of the Apes Retrospective part 2

Episode 012 - The Planet of the Apes Retrospective part 3
Dark Discussions finishes up their trilogy The Planet of the Apes retrospective. Philip and Mike discuss genetic engineering, both its potentials and dangers, and try to answer the question of what amount of intelligence within a creature would establish the beast to be considered more than just an animal. Such novels as Michael Crichton’s Next, Robin Cook’s Chromosome 6, H. G. Wells' The Island of Dr. Moreau, and Robert C. O’Brien’s Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH are brought into the topic. George A. Romero’s film Monkey Shines, Will Smith’s I Am Legend, and the new documentary Project Nim are discussed. Even the cartoon show Family Guy has some value to add to the dialogue with its talking dog Brian. No matter what one thinks, Rise of the Planet of the Apes may be just the starting point on subjects as diverse as stem cell research, cloning, and genetic engineering. Horror films may be nothing more than fiction yet science is so much more. Science is reality.

The Futile Podcast

Deconstructing 80's & 90's action movies. Relating them to comics, TV, and cartoons from then and now.

http://www.granateseed.com/futilepodcast

Several of their episodes feature discussions of post-apocalyptic films including:

Episode ? Mad Max 1 & 2

Episode 209 The Road
Zack and Ian discuss how bleak is the new black in terms of cinematic post-ap fashion.

Episode 229 The Book of Eli
Mark and Ian talk about this serviceable Post-Ap. Denzel is kind of wasted and Oldman has a little fun but isn’t what I’d like him to be. Really this just makes me want to watch Beyond Thunderdome again.

Episode 288 Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome
Ian is joined by Matt, Joshua, Mychal, and Malcolm to talk about the closing chapter of the Mad Max saga. Three cheers for 80′s pop saxophone, shooting on location and bad ass set design! Oh and a meaningful post apocalyptic story with dare I say a hint of optimism.

Mail Order Zombie - Post-Apocalyptic Summer 2011

Yes, it IS possible to have a post-apocalypse without zombies, and this is the first of three monthly episodes of MOZ's Post-Apocalyptic Summer 2011. Brother D reviews the movie Steel Dawn (dir. Lance Hool) and he's joined by Miss Bren to talk about the movies The War Game (dir. Peter Watkins) and Panic in Year Zero! (dir. Ray Milland). We have a question for the PAQ, or Post-Apocalyptic Quiz, post-apocalyptic news, post-apocalyptic movie trailers . . . and the Feedback Discussion (and even the briefest of mentions of post-apocalyptic porn).

Listen below, or visit Mail Order Zombie.

Mail Order Zombie episode 166

It's the end of the month, which means it's time for the end of the world with another Post-Apocalyptic Summer episode on Mail Order Zombie! This time around, Brother D and Miss Bren take a look at The Postman (dir. Kevin Costner) and Damnation Alley (dir. Jack Smight), with an assist from MOZ Family Members Tracey and Scott, respectively. Not only do they tackle the movies, they also tackle the books upon which the films were based. Also, 'dillo prepared a review of the film A Boy and His Dog (dir. L. Q. Jones) (which I say still has one of the best DVD cover art images ever - a smiley face in a mushroom cloud - GOLD!). Mixed into the episode is a bit of post-apocalyptic news, the Post-Apocalyptic Quiz, the Zombie Aptitude Test and a more-musical-than-normal Feedback Discussion.

Mail Order Zombie episode 168

Our final installment of our Post-Apocalyptic Summer series, Brother D, Miss Bren and Tracey spend some time On the Beach. Bren and Tracey read the Nevil Shute novel; D and Bren watched the 2000 Australian television mini-series (dir. Russell Mulcahy); all three watched the 1959 film (dir. Stanley Kramer). Also, Brother D reviews the answers from this PAS series' Post-Apocalyptic Quiz, and Bren joins him for another serving of the Feedback Discussion.

Mail Order Zombie episode 170

Since 2008, Mail Order Zombie has covered zombie movies, zombie movie music, post-apocalyptic and zombie literature, zombie comics, zombie games, zombie operas, etc. Weekly, Brother D brings the reviews, and Miss Bren joins him for the weekly Feedback Discussion. Zombie news from around the world is covered in the Zombie Beat, and interviews with zombie media makers round out the show.
