The Colony 2

So I finally watched the first episode of season two of The Colony. I was a big fan of season one so was really looking forward to it starting up again, and so far it's been worth the wait.

The basic premise is that they take seven volunteers, tell them that a viral outbreak has broken down society to the point that they're on their own, and drop them into a 12 acre compound filled with buildings that are not just abandoned, but mostly destroyed. There is no electricity or running water, and they're only given about a week's worth of food to start.

In addition to the dangers of hunger and thirst, they add roving marauders, who already in the first episode stage an overwhelming attack and walk off with the majority of the colonists supplies. Didn't those guys watch season one? It should have been obvious that grouping all your supplies on a single shelf in your main dwelling is a bad idea. They should be broken out into smaller caches, or at least hidden away from view of anyone who breaks in.

But even so, I really enjoyed the first episode. You can already tell where the personality conflicts are going to come in, and it looks like they're going to be challenged a lot by outside forces over the season.

If you want to follow along, or even participate in the experiment, Discovery Channel has set up a social site at http://thecolony.discovery.com/outbreak, which looks kinda cool.

I couldn’t watch season one it was a little bit contrived, correction a lot contrived. Why go though the brain damage of building a vehicle, a weapon when you’re in the middle of LA? With most of the population dead in two hours you could have a weapon, ammo and a functioning vehicle. How many engineers did they have five, six? In a real survival situation if you had one count yourself lucky. It was a mixture monster garage, and survivor with out the “Bill the tribe has spoken.”
If this is entertainment lets be up front about it, cut out the “survival aspect.”

Yeah, I won't disagree with any of your points. It wasn't strictly realistic. But even so it was fun to watch, and it does seem like they've corrected some of those mistakes in this season.
