Help Shape The World of Depleted
Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 9:04PM A few days ago, I got an email letting me know about a new project that looks really interesting called World of Depleted. Billed as a "transmedia" effort, it will encompass short films, stories, artwork, songs and other audio content, all set in the World of Depleted universe. They even have plans for a full-length feature film.
The world of World of Depleted is described as one in which "a series of small attacks ignites an overreaction from governments, which in turn kicks off a massive counter-reaction from the population. The resulting civil unrest is unprecedented, and it shatters supply lines, which ushers in famine and opens the gates to widespread plague and disease. In the U.S., there are only 1% of the populace remaining—approximately 5 million people. While some places are unaffected by the riots, nothing’s been spared from change. Towns that thrived on factories or higher education are now ghost towns, while cities are largely a shambles. Reclamation of old technology is a full career for some, while others concentrate on reclaiming even older ways of life through living off the land and communal societies."
What's really interesting about the project is that anyone can apply to be a content contributor. Submissions are evaluated for content and quality, and if accepted, are branded as either canon, which shapes the universe, or apocrypha, which they regard more as fan fiction. Contributors earn a special contributor badge, and there may even be revenue sharing options available.
While I have fantasies about writing a story that gets accepted as canon, my main interaction with World of Depleted will probably be as a content consumer. But I know there are a lot of creative folks out there, so I'm looking forward to following the stories of Depleted in whatever form they're delivered.
From what I understand, the first canonical aspect of the story will be a short film called Forsaken, which may be released on March 1st. Check out the trailer below, then head over to WorldofDepleted.com for more about the project.
