Stake Land Kicks Major Ass

Given its extremely limited theatrical release (it made like $18,000 in two weeks), there's a good chance that you haven't seen the post-apocalyptic vampire film Stake Land yet, and it wouldn't surprise me if you hadn't even heard of it. But luckily, the distributors of the film decided to try something a little unusual, and they also released the film on video on demand on the same day it hit theaters, so I was able to watch it tonight.
Here's the synopsis: "America is a lost nation. When an epidemic of vampirism strikes, humans find themselves on the run from vicious, feral beasts. Cities are tombs and survivors cling together in rural pockets, fearful of nightfall. When his family is slaughtered, young Martin is taken under the wing of a grizzled, wayward hunter whose new prey is the Undead."
I think the best way to describe it would be to throw Zombieland, The Road, and the novel The Passage into a blender and mash them all up into one story. But I don't mean to sound like it's just a copy of other ideas. Yeah, it felt pretty familiar in a lot of ways, but don't let that stop you from watching it; this movie totally rocks.
Check out the trailer below, and if that piques your interest, they've also set up a few viral'ish sites to give more background on the characters and the universe of the film.
